Plot: In Catania, a the Platania family home, a young French girl, Caterina Leher, arrives as a governess. This family unit includes the elderly widower Leopoldo, his son Enrico, who is typically Sicilian in his extramarital adventures, his daughter-in-law Elena, a ditzy intellectual who discreetly flirts with the acrimonious writer Alessandro Bonivaglia, a tolerated frequenter of the house, and their two small children, all faithfully served by a naive girl: Jana. Both Caterina and the Platania family are religious, but in a very particular way. Caterina is "sin" not so much because education and nature have endowed her with abnormal instincts, but because these instincts, mixed with a fanatical desire for respectability, trap her in a mechanism of complacent remorse and distorted mortifications. Jana suffers from Caterina's behavior, and following a slander by the governess, she is expelled and sent back to her native village. During this journey, she is involved in a train accident that causes her death. After a new maid, Francesca, is hired, Leopoldo discovers the woman in intimate relations with Caterina. Caterina, having obtained Leopoldo's forgiveness, and learning from him of Jana's tragic death, attempts suicide but is saved by the elderly widower who cannot forgive himself for having, many years earlier, driven his teenage daughter to take her own life due to excessive intransigence.
