Plot: Benjie, a black soldier who wore the Union Army uniform during the Civil War, returns to the small town of Ironwood and is welcomed like a son by old McMaster, a wealthy landowner in the area. Benjie moves into his house and soon becomes his partner. The inhabitants of Ironwood, however, led by Kolby, show hostility towards him and subject him to systematic racial discrimination to the point of poisoning all his livestock. Benjie and McMaster do not lose heart and, with the help of some Native Americans, continue to run the farm. But when Benjie marries Nancy, the young sister of a Native American chief, the situation becomes untenable. The villagers break into the farm, rape Nancy, and kill old McMaster. The time for the final showdown has arrived...
